Program Overview

Evaluations of program and policy strategies can contribute significantly to the public health evidence base that informs practitioners about what strategies are truly effective and how they can be implemented or enforced for maximal impact.

The Safe States Alliance and the American Public Health Association (APHA) – with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) – are offering the Injury and Violence Prevention (IVP) Program & Policy Evaluation Institute. The Institute includes three distinct components:

  1. A three-day (16 training hours) Evaluation Workshop designed to help evaluation teams develop an outcome or impact evaluation plan for their proposed program or policy, which will take place from May 18-20, 2014 in Atlanta, GA;
  2. Up to eight hours of customized technical assistance opportunities (through hourly "evaluation consultations”), that will provide IVP practitioners with access to evaluation experts that can enhance their evaluation capacity and support their specific evaluation activities; and
  3. An online "Community of Practice” that will provide a forum for discourse, collaboration, learning, and skill-building among state IVP program practitioners.

Evaluation Team Selection

Through a competitive application process, Safe States and APHA will select up to eight state-based evaluation teams to participate in the Evaluation Institute – up to four (4) "program evaluation” teams and up to four (4) "policy evaluation” teams. Teams can consist of up to four members each.

Safe States and APHA will provide travel support for up to four team members of each selected team (up to eight teams total) to attend the Evaluation Workshop in Atlanta, GA.
Travel support will include roundtrip airfare, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, and per diem at the prevailing federal rate. Additional details regarding travel to the Workshop will be provided to all successful applicants.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants are state injury and violence prevention (IVP) programs. While state evaluation teams can be comprised of up to four individuals from any sector (within or outside of the state IVP program), the state IVP program representative must serve as the leader of each selected state evaluation team and will be responsible for all administrative and logistical responsibilities associated with the participation in the Evaluation Institute.
